Russian Nouns Genders


Masculine gender
Nouns ending in a consonant. The ending of masculine nouns in the nominative case is called zero ending (0).
Exception: words ending in -а, -я.
These words denote persons of the musculine gender:
дедушка (grandpA), папа (father), дядя (uncle).
The gender of a nickname is masculine if the noun refers to a male: Ваня, Петя, Коля.

Femine gender
Femine nouns end in -а, -я. Сестра (sister), мама (mother), подруга (girl friend), семья (family).

Neuter gender
Nouns ending in -о, -е. письмо (letter), окно (window), дерево (tree), радио (radio), метро (metro), Keep in mind that both masculine and feminine may end in -ь. You should memorize these words.
